Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a child. The aunt she had was a nurse, who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. She showed DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay's mother also had a social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to communicate by means of the medium of art. Although DuVernay was raised in Compton with her family she was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. Her father recalled watching the historic civil right's march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama to help inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism at the age of a student. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay was appointed to monitor and investigate the residence for a specific member of the Jury. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she made the decision to go into the publicity industry. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in an unassuming production studio straight out of school. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. Her agency launched numerous lifestyle and promotion networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
